You don't need a calendar to tell you you're halfway through the summer. Your hair probably tells the whole story if you haven't taken proper precautions against the sun, chlorine and humidity.
But Corinna Hernandez, a stylist at Manhattan's Bumble and Bumble salon, reminds you how to care for your hair:
Before getting in the pool, hit the shower - or even rinse with a garden hose. "Hair is like a sponge and if it is already saturated with fresh water, it can't soak up the chlorine," explains Corinna.
After wetting hair, use a leave-in conditioner, which will help hair maintain the moisture and guard against green.
On humid days, after washing and towel-drying hair, coat hair with a serum, such as Bumble and Bumble Defrizz Serum. Then use a blow dryer - always pointing downward to keep flyaways to a minimum. Use a lightweight silicone lotion that will act as a barrier to the elements on fully dry hair.
For long hair, you can then wrap hair in a loose bun and, using a light hand, mist with a holding spray. Take the bun out a few minutes later for frizz-free waves.
Strawlike hair is a cry for help. You need a deep penetrating hair mask to get back your silky locks. A big, floppy straw hat, however, is a great way to protect your hair from ultraviolet rays. There also are UV-blocking, leave-in hair treatments.
